Creative DIY Home Decor Project to Personalize Your Space by Chafin Communities

You don’t have to be an artist or a handyman to customize your home with a DIY home decor project. You just need a little bit of inspiration and a can-do attitude. I have compiled a list of DIY projects that are simple and fun to get you started.

Grab a Paintbrush

Your home is your canvas, so let those colors fly! A splash of color revitalizes any room in the house without breaking the bank. You can take on a small project like painting a chair or the bathroom vanity without much of a time commitment. Whether you add a splash of color or touch up the existing shade, a fresh layer of paint on an outdated piece of furniture can perform a total makeover. If you are ready to take it up a notch, paint an accent wall. Go for a color that complements the existing decor and watch your living space transform.

Experiment With Wallpaper

If you don’t want to dedicate yourself to painting, you can always opt for wallpaper. Wallpaper makes a great accent wall as well. Beyond its basic function, however, you can even line the insides of drawers or shelves for some peekaboo character. There are so many patterns and colors to sample until you find the right fit.

Arrange a Basketball Wall

I love this DIY for any sports fan or athlete. It would look great in a child’s room, office, movie room, etc. First, you need to attain about six basketballs (more or less depending on your desired arrangement). These can be brand new, but you can also collect used basketballs from thrift stores. Used basketballs will give the display more of a vintage look. Poke a hole in the basketball to let out a sufficient amount of air. Then, all you have to do is hook them to the wall using the hole you made.

Personalize your Coasters

Coasters are such a small detail in the home, but they are high-traffic items. All you need for this project is 4×4 tiles, Mod Podge, a foam brush, a clear coat spray paint, and pictures of your choice. The pictures can be family photos, a Canva design, or any picture that matches your aesthetic. Just cover the back of the photo with Mod Podge and stick it to the tile. Let it dry, then add a layer of Mod Podge to the front of the picture. Once the Mod Podge has completely dried, make sure to secure it with the final coat spray. Now you have a functional item with a unique touch.

DIY Shelves

If you’re confident with a hammer and nails the possibilities are endless. Free-floating shelves are a popular option to fill an empty wall. They are a great way to sneak in some storage and display books, plants, or knick knacks. These shelves are an opportunity to get creative and add some extra character to the room. Reinvent old crates, old drawers, or skateboard wood for a special design. Of course, there is also a plethora of brand-new wood to suit your style as well.

Create a Gallery Wall

If you catch yourself with a wall that feels empty, simply fill it with pictures or posters. You can mix and match frames and sizes, or create a linear display depending on the visual you are going for. I recommend planning the layout with frames or pictures on the floor, so you can play around with different looks. It also helps to start with the biggest item and work around it from there. Trust your eye and go with what visually appeals to you.

Tackle those DIY home decor projects and start personalizing your home today! Your home should be a reflection of those who live in it, so take your time and enjoy the process of filling it with hints of your world.
