Wood Wall Accent an Interior Design Trend

Have you ever caught yourself staring at a wall saying, what does this wall need? You can turn boring walls into works of art by creating a wood wall accent. A wall accent is a great way to add a pop of color or eye-catching design to any room too. But use your imagination when it comes to designs, grids, slats, or patterns. Wood can remain raw, stained, reclaimed, or painted. Moreover, it can add texture, color, depth, and character to a room, wall, or even your entire home.

Focal Points

First thing to remember when redecorating a room is understanding every room needs a focal point. Something that immediately draws your eye’s interest and grabs attention into the space. Similarly, bold paint colors on a wall, artwork, furniture, wall paper, windows, and fireplaces all work too. But today we are going to talk about another way which is through wood wall accents.

Wall accents add character to any space from rustic to contemporary. When you create an accent wall it looks incredible and contrasts the everyday flat walls. You can use anything from reclaimed wood, extra flooring, MDF, plywood, or trim. In short, cut wood into eye-catching patterns. Wood can sit flat on the wall or used to add texture.

Cost of Project

Most wood accents are inexpensive and there are others that are not. Some are easy to install and others are time consuming. Consequently, they can be as simple or as complex depending on the design.

TIP: Facebook marketplace or Craigslist is a great way to find free or cheap reclaimed wood. First thing to remember is to be sure that you ask if the wood’s treated. Do not install treated lumber or pallet wood in your home. These woods contain chemicals which can be very harmful to breath indoors. For this reason treated lumber is for outdoor project use only.

The Shiplap Craze

Shiplap is all the rage right now and it definitely puts the days of the 70’s one sheet wood paneling to shame. Go vertical or horizontal with shiplap. If you’re wondering which way you should layout your build, remember two rules. First, horizontal boards can make a room feel bigger. Second, designing a space with a vertical install draws the eyes up. This stretches everything and gives the illusion that a room feels taller.

You can even slant your shiplap into patterns or put on a diagonal for a really dramatic result. Shiplap can be painted or remain natural. Shiplap can be expensive. To minimize costs, try a DIY of plywood to create your boards. All in all, just remember to keep the spaces even between boards with hanging.

Half the Wall with Wainscoting

Notably, you do not need to design from floor to ceiling to make a statement. Wainscoting is a form of wood paneling. Go halfway up the wall and top it with a chair rail trim. This is a classic wall accent that has been around for years. Furthermore, painting it white and pairing it with a bold or even subtle color can take your room to another level.
